Audio Confession and a Question

Soon enough, I will buy a new DSLR that shoots video. What a day that will be. But I hear that running audio directly into the camera may minimize my audio recording. Most DSLRs use a mini input that feeds directly into the camera. I'm thinking about buying an audio field recorder and then lining up audio and video when I edit. Does anyone have a recommendation for a great audio field recorder that uses XLR inputs (I have a shotgun and wireless lav). What's the best (most versitle) format to record with? Thanks!
