Can I edit my own version of my friend's documentary?

Question: I co-produced and shot a documentary that was my friend's idea. Can I edit my own version of it and submit it to film festivals?

Answer: Is your friend okay with you doing this? Is it worth losing your friendship if they are not okay with it? Who paid for the equipment and/or any other costs involved in the shoot?
