Should I go to film school?

by Susan
(New Mexico)

Question: I have been thinking about film school to learn documentary filmmaking techniques. Do you think it's necessary to take classes, if so where do you recommend I go?

Answer: It really depends on your ultimate goal. If you are hoping for this to become your profession, I would say that some training would be helpful, especially if you are starting from scratch.

I am a strong believer in "learn as you go". Truly, the best way to learn and become better is to simply get started. Filmmaking is one of those professions where you learn by DOING. I would have much more confidence in someone who has made five films than someone with a masters degree in filmmaking.

That being said, there is a lot of value in learning from someone who has been before you and can guide you through the process.

As for classes, I can highly recommend the Film and TV Workshops in Maine. I attended a couple of classes there many years ago and it was a wonderful experience.
